“My friends,” he said. “I have never been very good at speeches but I’ll try. I want to tell you all how sad I am to leave this beautiful land. I wish I could stay, but I have too many responsibilities in my own home. Although I came here for sad reasons, I’m glad that I was able to come and help.”

All the animals cheered and saluted the good doctor.

“Please remember that you should never let flies settle on your food before you eat it. And do not sleep on the ground when the rains are coming.” Doctor Dolittle paused for a moment. “And I hope—I hope you will all live happily ever after.”

The Grand Gorilla rolled up a large rock. He placed it near the door of the hut. “This rock will mark the spot where Doctor Dolittle once lived. The great doctor who traveled so far to save the monkeys of the African jungle.”

The animals cheered again, and a tear came to the doctor’s eye. It was a wonderful tribute. And even today, if you go to that spot in the jungle, you will see the rock.

Then, when the party was over, the doctor and his animals started on their way to the seashore. All the monkeys went with him as far as the edge of their country, carrying the trunk and bags, to see them off.
